Six films made in School of Documentary Film at the Review of Short Films

Six graduation documentaries of last year's Restart's School of Documentary Film are selected to the competition of the short film festival Kratki na brzinu <HR> that will happen from 6th till 11th of June in Sv. Ivan Zelina, Croatia. The official opening is on Wednesday, 7.6. in Cinema Zelina and great pre-programme, the day earlier in Dokukino KIC in Zagreb with short films selected by the festival partner Visions du Reel, Nyon, SCH. Selected School films are: 'Before the Flags' by Sanja Bistričić, 'Go Hard or Go Home' by Dražen Puklavec, 'Non Semper Arit Aestas' by Petar Vukičević, 'Bolan' by Sara Bernarda Moritz, 'Show' by Sonja Lazić and 'Verticals' by Lorna Kunčić.

New festivals for Restart films

May looks like this. 'Artist on Vacation' by Sandra Bastašić and Damian Nenadić will be screened in the official program of the Art Film Festival - AVIFF in France (Cannes, 20. - 21.5.). A fantastic crew from the Croatian city of Osijek is organizing the review of the short Croatian films called Filmska runda / Film Round (26. - 28.5.). Part of the program Festivalska runda are two Restart's films, 'Islands of Forgotten Cinemas' by Ivan Ramljak and 'Half a Man' by Kristina Kumrić. Local title of Ramljak's 'Islands...' is 'Kino otok', and that is also the name of the festival that is happening in the Slovenian city of Isola from 31.5. till 4.6. The Film will be screened as a part of The Author's Short Film Retrospective. A popular side program of Kino otok/Isola Cinema, Video on the Beach, included two films from Restart's School of Documentary Film, 'Before Flags' by Sanja Bistričić and 'Show' by Sonja Lazić. 'Half a Man' is also accepted to the East End Film Festival in London (UK) where it will be screened in the program Generation Gap.

Half a Man wins Brooklyn Womens Film Festival

Our first short fiction film "Half a Man" by Kristina Kumrić has won 3 awards at Brooklyn Woman's Film Festival, annual event in New York that celebrates films made by women and with strong female characters and themes. Brooklyn Women's Film Festival is committed to promoting the underrepresented voice of independent storytellers to create unique and female centric films while creating a safe, collaborative community for women in indie film. "Half a Man" has won Grand Prix of the festival, Award for the Best Short Fiction Film and actress Janja Avdagić in the role of 10-year old Mia has won an Award for the Best Performance. Altogether "Half a Man" has won eight festival awards so far. Festival also stated that in 2016, American organisation "Women in Film and TV" released a study that showed that women represented only 4% of directors, 11% of writer, 3% of cinematographers, 19% of producers and 14% of editors in American film industry.

Developing new projects

A Restart is developing two new documentary projects. Tea Vidović is at the moment in Sofia, Bulgaria in the first of three sessions of international documentary project development workshop BDC Discoveries where she is working on her debut 'Bride in Search of Happiness'. Workshop, from 8th till 14th of May, is organised by the Balkan Documentary Center with international tutors Martichka Bozhilova, Paul Powels, Boris Mitić, Mila Turajlić, Rada Šešić, Dimitra Kouzi and Aleksandar Manić. In the framework of the 10th International Documentary Festival Beldocs, Belgrade, Serbia, Jelena Novaković is developing her second documentary project 'Learning to Walk 2' at the Beldocs Pro Workshop (9. - 12.5.) under the supervision of Dragan von Petrović. Beldocs will also screen her short debut 'Ana Square', in the program Millenium Reality from the Female Perspective, selection of Croatian docs directed by women (currated by Dijana Nenadić). These days 'Ana' will also have the German premiere at the 14th Neisse Film Festival (Grosshennersdorf, Gorlitz, Zittau, 9. - 14.5.) in the program 'Power of Faith'.

My World is Upside Down won two awards in Los Angeles

Restart's feature co-production 'My World is Upside Down' by Petra Seliškar won two awards at the 12th South East European Film Festival Los Angeles - SEEfest. The film won Special Jury Mention in a documentary competition and cinematographer Brand Ferro was awarded for The Best Cinematography in a Documentary Film. These are the first awards to My World, totally 11th festival recognitions to Restart's films this year.

The school of documentary film

Škola dokumentarnog filma
The school of documentary film is taking place in Zagreb once a year and it is conceived as an intensive programme held by international tutors as well as those from Restart. They will be teaching the participants about basic and advanced skills needed to make their own documentary film.
