Be Realistic Demand the Impossible

Vanja Juranić was born in 1974 in Zagreb. She graduated from high school in the US. She
earned a degree in textile and clothes design in Zagreb. A member of the Croatian Film
Directors’ Guild. Vanja has taken part in several international film training workshops, seminars
and masterclasses: Berlinale Talent Campus, Sarajevo Talent Campus, Sarajevo City of Film,
RE-ACT Workshop, John Truby TV Drama Seminar, Paul Haggis Directing the Actors
Workshop, Robert McKee Story Seminar and Love Genre Seminar. The script for the film In the
Square (STEPS International / ZDF ARTE/ Mitropa), written by Vanja for the global project as
part of the 2007 Berlinale Talent Campus on the topic of ‘What is democracy?’, was selected
internationally for New Talents and premiered at Berlinale in 2008. Vanja’s script for the short
fiction film See You in Sarajevo was selected for Sarajevo City of Film 2008 and the film based
on this script was screened at different international film festivals, from Clermont-Ferrand in
France to Sofia Film Festival. Vanja’s second feature documentary Am I Happy? premiered at
the 2011 ZagrebDox, winning a special mention. Vanja’s feature fiction debut Zagreb
Cappuccino was screened at Göteborg Film Festival in 2015. At Pula Film Festival the film won
two awards, the Big Golden Arena for music and the Breza Award for best debut for the DoP
Danko Vučinović. Vanja’s short fiction film Girl with a Moustache, a French-Romanian co-
production between Meta Cultural Foundation, La Francophonie and Romanian Cultural Institute
premiered at Slamdance Film Festival in 2016.
