Dokukino has been continuously screening documentary film program since 18th June 2009, when the first and only cinema in the region dedicated to documentary films opened. After three years spent in Croatia film in Katančićeva street in Zagreb, in 2012 Dokukino moved its program to Cultural and Information Center (KIC), where it’s operating as Dokukino KIC.
Dokukino KIC is a unique cinema specialized for documentary films, located at Cultural and Information Center (KIC) on the adress Preradovićeva 5 in the centre of Zagreb. Throughout the whole year Dokukino follows the world trends on the documentary scene and brings to Zagreb’s audience the most fresh and interesting documentary titles from the eminent regional and world festivals, but at the same time actively works on valorization of Croatian documentary film. Dokukino’s program is defined by the current events in society and screens films which speak about relevant social topics in artistically innovative way, and stimulate open critical thought and discussion. In 2021, we became a member of the largest network of European arthouse cinemas, Europa Cinemas, thus positioning Dokukino KIC on the cultural and film map of Europe. Dokukino is also a member of the Croatian Network of Independent Cinemas and the International Art Cinema Association CICAE.
In addition to the regular program, Dokukino also conducts the Hall of Fame program – A Guide to the History of Documentary Film, which presents important documentaries that have influenced the development of world documentaries with their innovative approach, as well as rarely shown masterpieces of the documentary and hybrid genres. In 2017, the Meet the Author program was launched, which brings together the work of interesting regional filmmakers through the format of a recorded one-hour conversation. In addition to special discursive programs and Q&A sessions with local, regional, and international authors, Dokukino also regularly organizes discussions with experts from the fields of politics, history, economics, philosophy, sociology, and anthropology after film screenings to cover the broader social issues that certain documentaries touch on.
Dokukino also launched the Democracy for Beginners educational program, the goal of which is to develop critical thinking among young people through documentary screenings and discussions led by colleagues from the Croatian Debate Society; the cinema also organises Docu-matinees for senior citizens.
In cooperation with the Cultural Information Center (KIC), we organize the manifestation Arteria dedicated to films about artists who express themselves in different media, and the program Film XX which showcases influential female authors whose work has been overlooked and marginalized in the official film canon curated by Dina Pokrajac.
