In a masterclass under the title &#8216;Profession: Cinematographer&#8217;, <strong>Vold<\/strong> will be speaking about her work as a cinematographer and the use of camera in documentary film, as well as about the underrepresentation of women in cinematography. With the development of technology and the omnipresence of small, flexible digital cameras, it has become increasingly easy to make a documentary film, but also increasingly important what it \u2018looks\u2019 like. The role of a cinematographer is, in agreement with the director, to establish the visual language of a film, define the atmosphere and mood that best supports the story to convey. Framing, light and motion are the cornerstones of a cinematographer\u2019s job, however in documentary film these are the most susceptible to unplanned changes, loss of control and needful adaptation. <strong>Vold<\/strong> will also reflect on the underrepresentation of women in film industry, particularly visible in the cinematographers\u2019 profession, including Croatia (less than 3 per cent), where women cinematographers extremely rarely get a chance to make a feature fiction film. Since 1990s onwards, only five women cinematographers got this opportunity, and three of them have even been honoured with awards (according to the 2019 data). However, the fact that over the past few years the most interest among new generations in studying at the Department of Cinematography at the Academy has been shown by young women is quite encouraging. The masterclass will be hosted by director <strong>Igor Bezinovi\u0107<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of the masterclass, the Zagreb audience will get a chance to see two films co-directed and shot by <strong>Marte Vold<\/strong> at Dokukino KIC.<br \/>\nFor <em>Saturday, 17 December, at 20:30<\/em>, the documentary &#8220;Wild Relatives&#8221; (2017) by <strong>Jumana Manna<\/strong> is scheduled, about the World Seed Bank located on the Norwegian island of Svalbard, near the North Pole, a sort of Noah\u2019s Ark containing over a million plant seed samples from all over the world. The film examines important issues like biodiversity, sustainable development, climate changes, corporate policies and resilience, and it garnered awards at CPH:DOX, Dokufest and Sheffield IDF. The existentialist comedy &#8220;Out of Nature&#8221; (2014) by <strong>Ole Gi\u00e6ver<\/strong> is scheduled for <em>Sunday, 18 December at 19:00<\/em>, about a man experiencing a midlife crisis, ready to leave everything behind, pack his backpack and move to the nature. He is about to experience a mostly peaceful, but occasionally dangerous adventure, for as fun as it may seem to run around the wilderness naked, it is always possible to bump into strangers at unexpected moments. The film won the prestigious <em>Europa Cinemas Label award<\/em> at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.berlinale.de\">Berlinale<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Marte Vold<\/strong> (1978) studied at the Nordland School of Arts and Film in Lofoten, the Oslo National Academy of the Arts and the Norwegian Film School in Lillehammer, where she graduated in cinematography in 2008. Skilled in visual and film art, <strong>Marte Vold<\/strong> equally presents her works as a director and cinematographer in galleries and cinemas. The short film &#8220;Totem&#8221; (2015) which she produced and directed was screened at the prestigious film festival New Directors, New Films at the MoMA and in 2018 she co-directed the feature length documentary &#8220;Letters&#8221; with <strong>Jero Yun<\/strong>. As a DoP, <strong>Vold<\/strong> has worked on several features over the past few years, including the award-winning fiction film &#8220;Out of Nature&#8221; (2014) by <strong>Ole Gi\u00e6ver<\/strong>, documentaries &#8220;Wild Relatives&#8221; (2017) and &#8220;Foragers&#8221; (2022) by <strong>Jumana Manna<\/strong>, screened at Berlinale and MoMA, &#8220;HIM&#8221; (2021) by <strong>Guro Bruusgaard<\/strong> and &#8220;Weight&#8221; (2022) by <strong>Thomas \u00d8stbye<\/strong>. <strong>Vold<\/strong> is currently working as a cinematographer and director on her feature length documentary project &#8220;The Whale&#8221;.
