On Saturday 19th January 2013 at 4 PM Dokukino KIC will host the Dutch director John Appel who will hold a masterclass on the subject ”How to choose the best story and characters for a documentary film”.
One of the most esteemed contemporary Dutch directors will talk about dramaturgy of documentary films, creating narrative lines and choosing the best protagonist for the film. Appel will show excerpts from his documentaries, as well as those from his colleagues’ films, and everybody who is interested will have the chance to ask questions.
Apart from holding a masterclass lecture open for the public, John Appel will be mentoring the participants of Restart’s School of documentary film and work on their ideas and documentary projects. Participants will have the chance to watch Appel’s latest documentary film ‘’Wrong Time, Wrong Place’’, which recently had its world premiere on IDFA. The film reconstructs the events of 22nd July 2011, when Andreas Brevick committed a massacre. He came to the youth camp of Labour party on the Norwegian island Utøya and killed 69 people. He also detonated a car bomb in Oslo which killed another eight people.
John Appel directed around 30 short, medium-length and long documentary films, some of which won a number of awards. He was a cinematographer on more than 40 documentary films, he is working as a guest lecturer at Dutch Film Academy and Media Academy in Amsterdam, advisor of The Netherlands Film Fund, tutor on scriptwriting workshops on IDFA and mentor of Binger Doclab and international documentary project ‘’Greenhouse’’. He is lecturing all around the world, mostly on workshops of documentary film. His latest film ”Wrong time, wrong place” had its world premiere on IDFA in 2012 and it deals with the recent dramatic event of mass killing in Norway.
