The most successful South Korean producer Min-Chul Kim in Zagreb. Twice he won the main award on IDFA, the biggest festival of documentary films in the world. In Zagreb, Restart is organizing a lecture on the subject ”To live sustainable life as a free filmmaker” on 15th December at 4 PM (Saturday) in Dokukino KIC (Preradovićeva 5).
On Saturday 15th December 2012 at 4 PM at Dokukino KIC (Preradovićeva 5), the most successful South Korean producer and one of the world’s most interesting producers nowadays, Min-Chul Kim, will hold a lecture on the subject ”To live sustainable life as a free filmmaker”. In this lecture he will talk about the production of his globally successful documentary film ‘Planet of Snail‘ (2011), which was shown on more than 70 global film festivals and got awarded on some of the most important ones. Among others, it got an award for the best documentary (long form) on the International Documentary Film Festival IDFA in Amsterdam, the biggest festival of documentary films in the world. The medium-length documentary ‘Iron Crows‘, which he produced, also won an award for the best film in that category only two years earlier. Min-Chul Kim will take examples of films on which he is working on the Balkans and talk about cross-cultural cooperation in documentary film and possibilities of international coproductions, as well as about the future of film production.
Masterclass is organized by RESTART with the support of Embassy of Republic of Korea in Croatia and Croatian Audiovisual Centre. This year Croatia and South Korea are marking 20 years since establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
Min-Chul Kim was born in South Korean family which owned a record shop, video library and photo studio in a small town in South Korea. While his father was developing black and white negatives, Min-Chul spent his childhood watching Hong Kong noir films. He studied communicational management in Amsterdam, and in order to make living, he worked on various film and TV productions. He did very diverse jobs, such as being literary agent, PR agent for night clubs and party events, and eventually he found his ideal job in being an independent producer of documentary films. He founded a production house ”Minch & Films”, and his filmography already includes two awards on IDFA.
