About film

Should access to the sea and sun be a universal right? “A Shortcut to the Sea” is a hybrid film incorporating essayistic elements, that explores the chaotic, DIY and almost absurd reality of summer vacations and the overdevelopment of the Mediterranean coast. Starting from a personal attachment to the place, the author takes us through the colonies of ‘’wild’’ settlements in southern Istria. Beyond a few false walls and roofs, we examine the tactics of appropriation and alteration of the coast, resale of land, and deforestation. We see images of overbuilt high-rise buildings and hotels, as well as the development of an accompanying industry centered around the idea of vacation. Who has the right to change them, who has the right to build, and who will ultimately have access to the sea?
