About the film

Haunted by the loss of her father and brothers, a young woman sets out to restore her late father’s abandoned masterpiece of public art, the Monument to Freedom. Combating time and adversity to bring both the artwork and her family’s legacy to life, she unearths from the fragments of her past the evolving meaning of personal freedom.

Elena Chemerska is a visual artist from Skopje, N. Macedonia whose multidisciplinary work spanning from moving images to sound to immersive installations has been presented internationally. She graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts in Skopje, North Macedonia and holds an MA in Fine Arts and Design from the Master Institute of Visual Cultures, AKV St. Joost Academy of Art and Design, NL. For her work so far in 2021 she received the Denes Award for Young Visual Artist (N. Macedonia) and the Prince Claus Seed Award (the Netherlands).

Most recent exhibitions include: “Precarity has a Chance: Public Spaces in Movement (Towards)”, “Late to the Party: Macedonian Performance on Video since 1991”, “Fatherland: A Monument to Freedom”, “Ostrale Biennale 021”, “Thresholds of No-Body in Particular” (co-authored with Ivana Mirchevska), “Transition”…

She is the author of the long-term documentary project “Fatherland: A Monument to Freedom” (2017-ongoing) focused on revitalizing the Monument to Freedom in Kochani, N.Macedonia, which has put into motion international collaborations between artists, cultural workers, conservation experts, and the local community.
Currently, she is in production of her debut documentary film “Fatherland: A Monument to Freedom”.
