Joshua Oppenheimer, one of the most progressive film directors of today, director of The Act of Killing and The Look of Silence, will have his masterclass, in Restart's organization, this Tuesday, 12 May at 19.00 at Dokukino KIC, Zagreb.
Oppenheimer will present his documentaristic method based on interventions in reality and acting performances, the method he presented in two of his awarded films – The Act of Killing and The Look of Silence. He'll explain his cinematic style, based on the clash of fiction and non-fiction, fantasy and reality, and his decision to portray political and societal "nightmares", such as the situation in Indonesia which is the main topic of his two most famous films. He'll also talk about the relations between film, social trauma and personal memories – a topic which he thinks is the key to contemporary cinematography and to which he has dedicated his work.
Joshua Oppenheimer has been working with paramilitaries, death squads and their victims for more than ten years, lookin into the relations between political violence and its depiction in society. He was educated at Harvard and Central St. Martins in London. He has worked as a senior researcher at the Genocide and Genre film research project and has published many works related to the topic. His feature documentary debut The Act of Killing (2013) has been awarded 72 times at various international film festivals, including the European Film Award and BAFTA, and has been nominated for an Oscar.
