As part of the 20 th anniversary edition of ZagrebDox, two masterclasses will be held at Dokukino KIC. In collaboration with the Festival, we will host the award-winning British director Marc Isaacs (along with screenings of two of his films) and one of the leading connoisseurs of the documentary genre, Tue Steen Müller from Denmark.
Marc Isaacs’ masterclass, titled Staging the Real and the Limits of Observation, is scheduled for Thursday, April 18 at 6 pm. From the smallest details to some grand gestures, the director will discuss how he manages to transcend the ‘banality’ of real life, as merely captured by camera, in order to make the film reach the potential of cinema as art form. The masterclass will be followed by a screening of Marc Isaacs’ film which earned him the Audience Award at 2008 ZagrebDox, “All White in Barking”. It was the first film in Restart Label’s catalogue, which started the distribution of documentaries in Croatia. In his typical, charming and fun manner, Isaacs challenges the prejudices and preconceived notions rampant in British society, occasionally reminiscent of Mike Leigh’s comedies.
Our second masterclass is brought to us by the great Tue Steen Müller, “This is Why I Love Documentaries…” on Friday, April 19 at 5 pm. Müller is one of the world’s leading documentary film experts. Not only does he publish reviews and different texts on documentaries on a nearly daily basis, but he also works as a consultant for many renowned film festivals, educational programs and workshops. His masterclass will give an insight into the contemporary documentary production and discuss new trends on the documentary scene. After the masterclass, another film by Marc Isaacs is to be screened at Dokukino KIC, “The Filmmaker’s House”. When the producers make the requirement that his next film be about crime, sex or celebrities, the Filmmaker decides to make a film in his own home, featuring a cast of characters connected to his own life: two builders, a cleaner and a homeless man.
Admission to both masterclasses is free, while tickets are required for the film screenings.
