In the series of workshops intended for preschool and elementary school age, children will find out how objects in films move, how does the invisible and miraculous side of objects looks under a microscope, how music is created in films and how music creates atmosphere in film scenes. In addition to all this, we create a space for children to ask a bunch of questions about everything that interests them about films and film-making.

Workshops are adapted to the age of the participants: ABC OF FILM FOR BEGINNERS workshop is for children aged 5 to 7, and the MEDIA LABORATORY workshop is for children aged 10 to 12. Workshops will be held at the POGON – Zagreb Center for Independent Culture and Youth at Trnjanska struga 34, Zagreb.

ABC OF FILM is a film and media literacy program that Restart has been running for many years, developing different approaches to film education for children. Through a practical and exploratory approach, participants are introduced to different aspects of filmmaking: from animation and sound to image, movement and creating their own film stories. The workshops are based on experimentation and play, encouraging children to explore how images and sounds are created in film through individual and collaborative work.

The workshops are led by film and multimedia artists Vanda Kreutz, Tin Dožić and Vanja Babić, who through their engagement in film and media education encourage children to explore image, sound, movement and different possibilities of film expression.

ABC OF FILM FOR BEGINNERS

For children aged 5 to 7.

Schedule:

Saturday, September 5 (10:00-11:00)
Sunday, September 6 (10:00-11:00)
Saturday, September 12 (10:00-11:00)
Sunday, September 13  (10:00-11:00)

We will explore the process of creating and shaping music for a film. First, we will become aware of the existence and then the role of music in film. We will listen to the sounds that are all around us, note what we hear and listen to. We will think about the role of sound in film that triggers various emotions in the viewer. We will explore animated film techniques such as stop-motion, create the illusion of movement and little by little turn one object into another, change their various positions and shapes in order to create our own story.

MEDIA LABORATORY

For children aged 10 to 12.

Schedule:

Saturday, September 5 (12:00-13:30)
Sunday, September 6 (12:00-13:30)
Saturday, September 12 (12:00-13:30)
Sunday, September 13  (12:00-13:30)

By combining various media and technologies (slide projector, overhead projector, CRT TVs, walkman, cassettes, microphone, camera, mixer, various lenses, filters, light box…) we will create a media laboratory in which materials will be created that will help us learn how objects in the film move on their own, and raise awareness of the importance and existence of sound in film. We will listen to the sounds that surround us, record what we hear, listen to and produce. We will combine the produced images and sounds into our own story and tell it through film and an art book.

All workshops are free of charge. Detailed information about the program and application can be found on the official ABC of Film website.
